Reading by Michael Kaan, author

March 2 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The Water Beetles, Michael Kaan’s first novel, is a novel loosely based on the diaries and stories of his father. Michael Kaan was born in Winnipeg, the second child of a father from Hong Kong and a Canadian mother.

Water Beetles is a riveting tale which captures the horror of war through the eyes of a child. Written in restrained, yet beautiful and affecting prose, it is an engrossing story of adventure and survival. The Leung family leads a life of secluded luxury in Hong Kong. But in December 1941, the Empire of Japan invades the colony. The family is quickly dragged into a spiral of violence, repression, and starvation. To survive, they entomb themselves and their friends in the Leung mansion. But this is only a temporary reprieve, and the Leungs are forced to send their children away.

The Water Beetles had the distinction short-listed for the 2018 Governor General’s Literary Awards.  Michael will do a reading, answer audience questions and sign books. Books are available for purchase before the event at McNally Robinsoon Booksellers or at the event.

Free admission. Donations welcome.
